Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner is calling on those planning to attend George Floyd’s March march across the city on Tuesday to take precautions and to protest peacefully against the Floyd family.
“I expect the march to be peaceful and respectful, with a focus on George Floyd and his family,” said Turner at a press conference on Monday.
Houston rapper Trae Tha Truth and Bun B work with the Floyd family to organize a Tuesday afternoon rally from Discovery Green in downtown. Floyd, a native of Houston and raised in the third district, died last week in police custody in Minneapolis. A video of his death has been posted online, which has sparked demonstrations, marches and riots across the country.
Turner said the city has stepped up its presence in the police force ahead of the March rally and is “increasing” the crowd. With the exception of a few riots, lootings and arrests that took place during 400 weekend protests, Turner said that the protests in Houston remained somewhat peaceful.
